Porto on the Rio Douro is where Portugal began.
The population of Porto, approximately 500,000, is relatively young, energetic, and hard working. The citizens are proud of their reputation as defenders of civil liberties. They also love outdoor activities and are avid fans, especially of their Porto team in the World Soccer League. The city offers a variety of live performance venues in theatre, music, and dance and hosts Fantasporto, an annual International Film Festival of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Other attractions include the art and architecture showcased in churches built over a thousand years, beautiful bridges, local crafts (azulejos) and industries (wine-making). In 2001 Porto was one of two cities designated a European City of Culture.
